Safety & Practical Information

Yes. Nicaragua is considered one of the safest countries in Central America.

As in all countries, petty theft can occur, but practicing normal travel precautions, keeping valuables secure, not displaying expensive items, and using hotel safes, helps ensure a smooth trip.

Costa Rica and Panama are also safe for travelers, especially in well-known destinations. Exercise the same common-sense precautions you would anywhere else: stay in well-lit areas, use official transportation, and follow local advice.

Avoid bringing:

  • Excessive cash or expensive jewelry
  • Walkie-talkies or radio transmitters (require permits)
  • Drones without a permit
  • Single-use plastics
  • Large professional electronic equipment that may require import documentation.

These items can cause customs delays or unnecessary risk.

Drinking tap water depends on the country.

Nicaragua

Safe in some cities, but we recommend bottled or filtered water.

Costa Rica

Tap water is generally safe in most regions, especially cities and tourist destinations.

Panama

Tap water is generally safe in Panama City and many towns; use bottled water in remote areas.

Central America uses 110–120V, Type A/B plugs (same as USA)

Travelers from Europe or other regions will need an adapter.

Nicaragua: Spanish is standard; English in Caribbean regions and tourist areas.

Costa Rica: Spanish; English widely spoken in tourism.

Panama: Spanish; English common in Panama City and Bocas del Toro.

Your guides will speak English and Spanish.

Money, Payments & ATMs

Nicaragua

Nicaraguan Córdoba (NIO) + USD widely accepted

Costa Rica

Costa Rican Colón (CRC) + USD commonly used

Panama

Panamanian Balboa (PAB) + USD (USD is the main currency)

ATMs are available in major cities and towns across all three countries.

Remote villages, islands, and natural reserves may not have ATM access, always carry some cash when visiting remote areas.

Yes, especially in hotels, restaurants, and touristic centers.

Small shops and rural areas may accept cash only.

Bring a mix of small USD bills and local currency for tips, small purchases, and remote communities. Avoid large denominations.

Packing & Equipment

We recommend:

  • Comfortable walking/hiking shoes

  • Light clothing (quick-dry material)

  • Rain jacket

  • Sunscreen & insect repellent

  • Reusable water bottle

  • Hat & sunglasses
  • Small daypack

Basic hiking gear is required for most nature tours. Items like trekking poles, flashlights/headlamps, and quick-dry clothes are highly recommended for long hikes or rainforest tours.

Light, breathable fabrics are best. Long sleeves and long trousers are useful for cloud forests and mosquito-prone areas.

Avoid bringing heavy gear, unnecessary valuables, excessive electronics, or prohibited items (see earlier question).

During Your Trip

Central America has two main seasons:

  • Dry season: December to April
  • Rainy season: May to November

Mountains and cloud forests (especially in Nicaragua and Costa Rica) are cooler.

The food is fresh, tasty, and diverse. Most restaurants use good hygiene practices.

Tap water safety varies by region (see earlier dropdown), so use bottled or filtered water when unsure.

We offer filtered water at our office in Matagalpa, where you can fill up your bottle.

Yes. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and allergy-sensitive meals can be arranged with notice. Some remote areas may have limited options, but we’ll coordinate with partners.

Our scheduled group departures typically have a maximum of 8 people.

We follow responsible tourism practices:

  • Limit group sizes

  • Support local communities

  • Carry refillable water containers

  • Stay on marked trails

  • Avoid wildlife disturbance

  • Use local guides and partners committed to sustainability
