Guiding with Purpose

Ernesto and the Spirit of Sustainable Travel in Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panamá

Travel through Central America is often remembered for its volcanoes, wildlife, and vibrant cultures. But what makes a journey truly meaningful is the people who guide you through it. At Matagalpa Tours, we are proud to work with guides whose experience and values embody the essence of sustainable travel in Central America. One of them is Ernesto Ocampo, a Nicaraguan naturalist whose passion for connecting people and nature has inspired travelers and conservationists from around the world.

A guide shaped by nature and community

Born and raised in Nicaragua, Ernesto has spent nearly two decades leading eco-tours and adventure travel in Nicaragua, Panama, and Costa Rica. What began as a teenage fascination with wildlife and landscapes has become a lifelong vocation rooted in conservation and education.

Through the years, Ernesto has guided countless travelers through cloud forests, volcanoes, coral reefs, and small rural communities, showing how eco-tourism in Central America can uplift local families while protecting fragile ecosystems. For him, every hike and conversation is a way to bridge science, culture, and conservation.

Collaborating for conservation impact

Ernesto’s work extends beyond the trails. As a naturalist guide for Oceanic Society, a world-renowned conservation organization based in the United States, he has led expeditions that combine research, education, and community-based travel.
These programs take travelers deep into Nicaragua’s and Costa Rica’s natural wonders, from volcanic islands and rainforests to the colorful reefs. While demonstrating how wildlife tours in Central America can directly support environmental protection.

His extensive collaborations with world-renowned companies, leading conservation NGOs, and prestigious universities, including Stanford, the University of Maine, the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point, Bridgewater, and many more, underscore the very essence of Matagalpa Tours. These partnerships reflect our unwavering commitment to responsible tourism, unmatched local expertise, and truly authentic experiences that inspire travelers while creating a powerful and lasting positive legacy.

Representing Nicaragua internationally

In 2024, Ernesto participated in the Adventure Travel World Summit in Panama, one of the leading gatherings for sustainable and eco-tourism in Central America and the Caribbean. There, he joined global leaders to share insights on creating genuine connections between travelers and nature, and on empowering rural communities through responsible travel.

These international collaborations reaffirm Matagalpa Tours’ commitment to quality and credibility, values recognized by our long-term work with respected partners such as Oceanic Society, universities, and research institutions that choose Nicaragua, Panama or Costa Rica as a destination for their field studies and multi-day nature tours.

Changing perceptions through experience

When travelers join Ernesto on a trip through Nicaragua, many arrive unsure of what to expect. By the end, they’re amazed, not only by the country’s safety and beauty but by the warmth and authenticity of its people.

From kayaking in volcanic lakes to sharing meals with local families, guests discover that these countries offer both adventure travel and meaningful cultural exchange.

As Ernesto often says, “Guiding is not just about showing people beautiful places, it’s about creating connections that uplift communities and preserve culture.”

Travel that makes a difference

At Matagalpa Tours, we believe travel should do more than move people; it should inspire them. Guides like Ernesto show how thoughtful, responsible tourism can protect nature and create opportunities for local communities.
